Adventure Island for Gameboy
The game of Adventure Island for Gameboy was released February 2, 1992 and has been a popular game since. The game features Mr. Higgins who travels the different worlds in search of Princess Leilani who was kidnapped by the Evil Witch Doctor.
She was taken to Adventure Island and has no food or weapons of any type. Mr. Higgins goes to Adventure Island which is in the South Pacific in search of Princess Leilani. The island is a maze of mountains, caves and the vegetation is thick tropical plants. On this island, hidden in different areas are tools you will need. Your skateboard and axe are among them as well as food.
The Game Plan
The weapons must be found quickly because the Evil Witch Doctor has demons ready to spring - bats, snakes and spiders are all waiting for you. There are plenty of traps that you will have to overcome before meeting the Evil Witch Doctor in person which is the object of the game.
You, as Mr. Higgins will travel across many worlds. This is a Mario style game where Mr. Higgins fights floating skulls, evil turtles and flying lizards. The fruit that you come across need to be collected for points and there are also eggs which contain power ups at various levels depending upon the egg.
Using an upgraded skateboard, you can go over the clouds and through the jungles at a high rate of speed. You can jump higher using the skateboard and you will need it because the Evil Witch Doctor has plenty of surprises in store for you.
Mr. Higgins, unlike the super heroes of yesteryear is an overweight guy who eats fruit like there is no tomorrow. Complete with white hat, grass skirt and no shirt, he worries not about his ever-growing belly as he searches for Princess Leilani.
Details
The fruit gauge is at the top of the screen and is both the health indicator as well as the amount of time you have to finish each level. With bars that disappear as the game counts down, when the gauge is empty, you are down one life. To keep this from happening, you must grab the fruit. Bananas, apples and the like are all available to keep your meter full.
Similar to the Sega game, Wonder Boy this game has some pretty good tunes to accompany Higgins hopping across the screen on his quest to save the princess. Make sure you look for the hidden honeybee close to the end of the first level. This will allow you to continue which is necessary if you want to play to the end of the game.
Cheats
Here are some of the game cheats that you can use when playing Adventure Island. The one everyone should know in order to stock up on everything is entering the password 0894 to get 99 of each item you can.
* On the first island, in the third area when you pass the frog, go over the ledge and down the other side. When you get there, jump. An egg will be shown. If you hit the egg, it will reveal a key. Take the key and a platform will pop up under you. This will take you to a secret room. A dragon here will give you the Hudson Bee, which lets you keep your hammer and dinosaurs should you die.
* When Higgins gets hit by a coconut on the title screen, press right, left, right, left, A, B, A, B to select the stage.
* When the game play ends if you hold left and press start you can continue playing from the last stage with all your items.
* When you get to the end of the first stage right before the G sign, jump up and down and this will give you an egg. The egg has a Hudson Bee, which allows you to have unlimited continues. If you lose all of your energy, hit any of the directions on the arrow key and press Start to take up where you left off.
The sound is good and is suitable to the game as well as the sound effects. Adventure Island is a good game for those who enjoy a Mario type game. There are some people who think the game is too hard but this may just be a different type of game than they are used to playing.
