The object of this game as an offensive player is to avoid your opponent’s attempts to tackle you, and on the defense side stop your opponent from reaching the goal line. The button configuration is simple; the d pad (Directional Pad) directs your player in the direction you want them to go. The A button which is your pass, tackle, and changes your position on defense. Then there is the B button that allows you to kick the ball, tackles, and choose your position on defense.
The game play in the beginning is not too hard. At the high School level, your opponents are very slow and at that pace, this game can become boring fast. In addition, with the college level, it is pretty much the same scenario; teams are too slow you may have more fun watching your lawn grow while cutting your lawn with scissors. However once you have gotten to a point where you have earned your professional title the game gets more interesting as the players speed increases adding more of a challenge to the game. Once you have passed the professional level and reached the playoffs this game really lives up to its name and the 10-yard fight becomes just that, a 10-yard fight. After you have developed your strategy and have brought yourself to a point where you can defeat your opponent in the playoffs then next on deck is the Super Bowl. If you have made it this far Congratulations are in order despite the fact that the opposing team is wearing pink jerseys do not be fooled playing at this level will not be pretty even though the team is in pink.
If you are looking for a few easy victories then stick to your pass game in the first couple of rounds against the computer. The computer in the early stages of the game tends to follow the quarterback so dropping back will allow you time to get a wide-open man somewhere downfield for an easy first down attempt. Also, remember that wiggling the directional pad like a mad man will sometimes break tackles, also run diagonally up field this increase the amount of yardage you earn. Keep in mind as well that the one who controls the clock controls the game; this achieved by wasting as much time as possible. Running around the field is a great way to do this as long as you can avoid being pummeled by the defense. The less time the computer has to play the better your chances are at a reaching a victory
When you are playing defense, there really is not much to do as far as strategic plans go. Its best to find the quickest lineman on your team then head directly for the quarterback in attempts to make a sack, but you have to be careful because you will be up the creek if he decides to make a pass play. Have fun with this game.
