Acid Drop For Atari

Acid Drop was a European exclusive Atari 2600 game released in 1992, produced in European PAL format.  In 2002, Thomas Jentzsch, re-mastered Acid Drop to US standard NTSC format. Compatible with all North American systems, Acid drop is one of the Tetris-clone or Columns type games.  Acid drop involves spinning, shifting and aligning block colors into a row in order to clear them from the screen.  The row of blocks, when completed, is dissolved by the “Acid Drop”.

By creating a line of three or more blocks of the same color, the row disappears and the remaining blocks fall down, but won’t disappear if they form another line.  Every 10,000 points, a special block appears which is the Acid drop that will remove three columns of blocks and starts the next level.

For game cheats, this game doesn’t allow combos and you can’t arrange three pieces in a diagonal manner, which makes the game simpler with no strategy. On the other hand, it is important to plan way ahead and organize columns carefully. For game cheats, it still doesn’t offer some of the challenges that other games do.

After a number of points, a four piece column will come down and you have to make this column touch as many pieces as possible since it makes the pieces it touches disappear.
This column is white and tilted horizontally so you need to choose the path with the most pieces in it and make it go down there.  After this happens, you have finished that level and a new level starts that moves faster.

It has colors of blue, pink, purple, yellow, gold and white, which is the end of the level row I just mentioned.  For every piece that disappears you get 100 points multiplied by the number of the level you are in. There are a total of 30 levels.  The game has a horrible musical rendition of Beethoven’s Fur Elise playing in the background.

Many game cheats start at one of the higher levels to make this game more challenging, since there are 30 progressive levels.  This game can be additive just like similar games of this nature.  It doesn’t leave a lot of room for game cheats as the game is pretty straightforward and not complicated enough for many of the more sophisticated gamers.

Many players prefer Columns over this game, and the song is so torturing to listen to that it can make it hard to concentrate, which adds some challenge to the monotony. The color blocks that drop change colors on their way down, making it more difficult for game cheats to determine a pattern.

This game was one of the final games for the Atari 2600. User reviews were not very good for this game in graphics, game play, sound or overall categories. Of course, now there are games of this nature with more challenging action and much better graphics.

What probably makes the Acid Drop for Atari 2600 the most interesting is the simple graphics and horrible background music.  It makes it comical to play by today’s standards.

Most game cheats don’t find much in this game, and there are very few hints or cheats available on this game.  While there are many games that have some computer programming flaws built in, this game is fairly simplistic in terms of challenge other than the different levels of difficulty that mainly involve the speed of the drops blocking.

Acid Drop for Atari 2600 is still an addictive puzzle type game for those that like this type of challenge.  It certainly can test your coordination skills, and is played with an Atari joystick that you manipulate for drop speed and column dropping of the blocks. Many players that were originally drawn to this game have now moved on to the more colorful and action packed Tetris and Columns games that are on the market.

Acid Drop is still a classic for those Atari 2600 fans and you can still find it on places like eBay and other gaming software sites that offer some of the classics on a resale basis. The higher skill levels of this game can be quite challenging for those that like this type of action and it is good for hours of play.

While Acid Drop is not popular with the game cheats that like tricking some of the more complicated games, it is still addictive to fans of the block dropping, column type games that can become addictive, more than anything else.
