Aahh!!! Real Monsters for SNES

Aaahh!!! Real Monsters was an excellent TV series that bolted children to their chairs for 30 minutes just to finish an episode. With that in mind, it's obvious that they used their popularity to begin selling various merchandise. Among all of this collected nickelodeon  merch came Aaahh!!! Real Monsters for the SNES.

The game featured party play that was innovative and entertaining, rather than clunky and frustrating. Even though video games based off of any type of movie or TV series generally is extremely boring, this particular platformer can be quite the nostalgic ride, especially for fans. If you weren't a fan of the series, here's some basic information to keep you in the loop.

First of all, the whole series was set in New York, this was made evident in many episodes. Moreover, they resided in a landfill that had a secret underground school, ingeniously called monster call. Now, there's no doubt that they were just trying to appeal to kids that are in elementary schooling, but it was a good show none the less. Instead of trying to become prepared for the real world in a business/responsibilities type approach, they aspired to be better monsters. Constantly they were given assignments, usually in groups, to scare a certain person or people. Now that you know the setting and plot we can get you to know your main characters.

The first monster to make his debut in the starting episode was Ickus. Son of the widely renowned and feared monster Slickus, Ickus was constantly intimidated by his fathers success. Ickus is short in stature and has wine red skin while sporting a wide mouth. He commonly tricks people into believe he's a bunny then inflates himself for the full effect. He best friended Krumm, the next character on the list.

Krumm is a simple laid back monster with detached eyeballs that he carries in his hands. Because of this, a common problem is him losing his eyeballs, causing the two other friends to search for them with him. He's generally the most friendly and like able out of the entire cast, but is incompetent to balance him out. He scares people by using the stench that comes out of his armpits, scarring people in more than one of their sense.

The last monster is Oblina, the descendant and youngest child of a rich family. She's commonly portrayed as arrogant and stuck up, while showing a caring attitude from time to time. She's the usually the leader of the group and best at scaring people, sometimes over shadowing the other monsters. She scares people by tricking people into believing she's various types of shapes then uses extremely sharp teeth to frighten them. Now, lets get to the game itself.

Aaahh!!! Real Monsters for the SNES
plays out exactly like the series with the same characters, plot, setting, everything. The only difference is that it's interactive rather than something you just watch from your living room. You get to switch off between all three main characters and each of them have different feats that you'll have to figure out yourself. With that said, it's surprisingly a great feature that makes the game more enjoyable, which was rare for the time it was released in. The only problem is that you platform rather than actually killing things, like in the series. They never murdered, just scared, and that was the end of it. So they get bonus points from me for sticking to the series, but they would of gotten more if they changed up the game a little bit.

Overall, this game is fun and has tons of platforming levels to tide you over in a nostalgic land for quite a while. Besides that, if you're not a fan, you'll probably hate that. Just because I loved the series I'll give Aaahh!! Real Monsters for the SNES a 78% out of 100.
